I’m Enough (mental illness) – Part 1
Today’s episode will touch on what I think is a tender spot for quite a few people. If you’ve ever felt shame, doubted your abilities or had distorted self image you’ll take comfort in hearing this transparent interview with my friend and special guest director, actress, mother wife and chief Warrior Woman Bernadette Speakes. She reminds us of exactly why we are enough.
Bernadette Speakes is an actor and director with 20+ years in the industry. As an actor, Bernadette has performed in theatres throughout the country; the Los Angeles Metropolitan area, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D. C. and Chicago’s The Goodman and Steppenwolf Theatres. Her TV and film credits include performing in the Emmy Nominated show, A Stage of our Own, with James Earl Jones, and in To Sir With Love II with Sidney Poitier. She was also a Recurring Guest Star in CW’s All American, Seal Team, Heroes, and Parenthood. In 2017, the ABFF Awards honored Bernadette as a member of the ensemble cast, for the cinematic classic in African-American films, Love Jones.
Bernadette Speakes’ directorial credits include theatre and film. In February 2020, The Bluest Eye was Bernadette’s second directorial endeavor with All The Way West Productions, Inc., as a six-weeks sold out production. The Hollywood Fringe Festival honored Bernadette as a “Female Director of Distinction,” for the production of Villain: An American Story. Bernadette has had the privilege directing other theatre productions, staged readings, and short films such as The Watsons Go To Birmingham – 1963 (The Hudson Theatre – Backstage), CUT (Humanitas Play Festival), Queen of Los Angeles (The Robey Theatre’s 25th Anniversary Celebration). Bernadette’s film short, Emerald King, has been accepted into several festivals and she’s currently in post-production on two other film shorts, Imaginist, and WITH.
Bernadette is a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Sorority Zeta Psi Chapter of University of Georgia; she is married, with two children and resides in California.
