It’s A Celebration – National Family Caregiver Month

Tune in to learn more about the upcoming Chicago Caregiver’s Expo.  Deacon Garlan Garner became the care taker of his recent widowed father immediately following his retirement at AT&T (32 years). His fathers health steadily declined after as his fight to maintain independence turned to an obvious need for dependance due to caretaking needs such as daily peritoneal dialysis at home. 21 months of caretaking came and went without a book or instructions or proper ways to cope, which is why the Caregivers expo is so important for so many entering, fully engaged or find themselves to have completed the task.

Phyllis (the mom) is the founder of “Phyl Good…About Your Health”, and skilled at helping you create a healthy lifestyle. She has been working in the field of health promotion with clients in corporate settings, groups and one on one. Anthony Box Jr. (“AJ” Phyllis’s son) is a 26 year old Accounting Major at Morehouse College. AJ has been diagnosed with schizophrenia for 5+ years and in is interested in sharing his experience with those who are in similar situations.

A Caregiver’s story and journey as she cares for both of her parents while continuing her career. After starting her insurance career Shawn‘s parents suffered many illnesses, which led to her caregiving journey. After years of caregiving, Shawn‘s parents passed on, and she began the next chapter for life. Currently, Shawn is an outreach manager for a national value based care doctors office. There she helps seniors get the quality healthcare she wished was available for her parents. Shawn currently resides in South Fulton, Georgia with her dog BJ.

Conversation with research expert Dr. Fayron Epps about alternative forms of support for Family Caregivers supporting loved ones with Dementia. Fayron Epps, PhD, RN, is a nurse with over 20 years of experience creating culturally relevant programs to reduce health disparities for underserved populations. She is a Professor and the incoming Karen and Ronald Hermann Distinguished Chair in Caregiver Research at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing.
