Dr. Eric F. Smith is the Bariatric Surgery Medical Director for Georgetown Community Hospital and Georgetown Bariatrics & Advanced Surgical Services in Georgetown, Kentucky. Dr. Smith is an Ashland, Kentucky native. He is a board-certified general surgeon and certified Center of Excellence Bariatric Surgeon who has been in practice since 2006. He graduated Cum Laude from Marshall University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He graduated from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2001. He completed his surgical internship and residency at Grandview Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio from Ohio University. During his training, his hospital was named the first Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery in the state of Ohio. He was awarded chief resident for an unprecedented two years in a row.
Dr. Smith is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and the American Osteopathic Association. He is also a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and is recognized as a Center of Excellence Surgeon. In 2021 Georgetown Community Hospital became a Center of Excellence in Robotics. Dr. Smith became a Center of Excellence Robotic Surgeon and is a Master Surgeon of Robotics. Dr. Smith performs more robotic bariatric surgeries than anyone in Central Kentucky. In February of 2021, Dr. Smith performed his 3,000th robotic case.
He is a national case observation site and mentor surgeon for Intuitive Surgical and serves as a national proctor, speaker and teacher for them as well for robotic bariatric surgery. In November of 2021, Intuitive Surgical named Dr. Smith one of only two Surgeon-Led Procedure Sites for bariatric surgery in the world. He has been featured on TLC’s Thousand- Pound Sisters for two seasons and is very passionate about helping patients change their lives and achieve the healthiest version of themselves.
